FIFA has established a Normalisation Committee to assume control of the Nigeria Football Federation. This move, sanctioned by the Bureau of the FIFA Council, comes after a significant governance dispute and seeks to restore stability before a new electoral process.

Background to the crisis

The action was prompted by the departure of the former NFF President, the General Secretary, and the whole Executive Committee. This occurred before a planned elective congress.

On that same day, the Nigerian President called for wide-ranging reforms. He stated the changes "must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football." The country's sports authority then named temporary officials and halted the election.

Committee's role and next steps

FIFA and CAF instructed the NFF to pause its election plans as they reviewed the situation. A joint mission met with parties in Nigeria, resulting in the proposal to form a Normalisation Committee.

This committee will manage the federation's operations, tackle administrative issues, and help move toward an elected board. Daily tasks will remain with the NFF Secretariat. The committee's members and detailed mandate are still to be revealed.

The period without stable leadership aligns with challenges for Nigeria's national teams. The men's side did not secure a place in the next FIFA World Cup, and the women's team missed qualifying for an upcoming Women's World Cup, ending a long-running participation streak. The committee's efforts will be key to reforming the sport's governance in Nigeria.
