Millwall Football Club legend Bryan King has revealed two players he recommended to the club before they hit the big time. King, who played for the Den side which was a point away from the top flight in 1972, recommended Kasper Høgh and Antonio Nusa to the club's chief executive Steve Kavanagh and head of recruitment Alex Aldridge in the last four years. However, the club did not take up the recommendations.

King, who scouted for Aston Villa for a total of 16 years, Tottenham for six and Everton for six, successfully recommended a string of stars for the premier league clubs, over that 30 year spell. He said, "I did send players' names to Millwall who were of interest after I retired, but I never heard back. As a scout, you get more notebacks than you do pats on the back. But that's the job."

Høgh is clearly ready for Scottish football - he scored his first goals for the club on 9 August, netting a first half hat-trick away to Kilmarnock in a 5–1 win. But that does not mean he is any better than Mihailo Ivanovic, who has 22 goals in two years with the Lions, or Zian Flemming, who hit the same number in three seasons before a Premier League move to Burnley, now the Lions' Championship rivals.

Big numbers are being attached to Nusa, but would he have been better four years ago than Romaine Esse, who was signed in 2022 and left for Crystal Palace for £12million in 2025. And Femi Azeez, who has stepped into his tricky winger boots, will be hard to hold onto if the Lions are not challenging for the top when the January transfer window arrives.

So if Millwall "missed out", it was perhaps with good reason. And besides, as any scout will tell you, it's not an exact science. The Lions are currently 2nd in the Championship, with 3 points from 1 game, and a recent form of W. They have scored 2 goals this season, and conceded 0.

Why it matters for Millwall Football Club

The club's decision not to take up King's recommendations may have been a wise one, given the players' subsequent development.

What comes next?

The Lions will be looking to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window, but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to hold onto Femi Azeez.
