Millwall Football Club boss Alex Neil expects a very competitive game when the Lions take on Queens Park Rangers in the First Round of the EFL Cup. The Lions kick off the season with the cup tie at Loftus Road, taking on a Hoops side who finished fifteenth in the Championship last season. On the final day of the campaign, Millwall were reliant on QPR to get a result away at Portman Road to have a chance of automatic promotion, but Ipswich Town scored two goals in ten minutes to quickly put those hopes to bed. Over the summer, the Hoops have made five additions, permanently signing left-back Boy Kemper, goalkeeper Calum Ward, right-back Tariq Lamptey and loaning in goalkeeper Pierce Charles and midfielder Glen Kamara. Neil was asked by NewsAtDen in his pre-match press conference on Thursday what he expects from them on Saturday. “They’re in a good spot,” Neil said. “They remind me very much of us at the start of last season, in the fact that the coach has a good amount of time to work with them. “I don’t think there’s been loads of changes in terms of personnel leaving. What they’ve tried to do is add to their team. So I think they’ll be in a pretty good spot. I’ve watched a lot of the pre-season games now just preparing for this match, and they look well organised. “They’ve got some really tidy players in terms of taking the ball in tight spaces. Illias Chair looks certainly back to his best. He was missing for large parts of last season. Lads like [Richard] Koné and [Rumarn] Burrell and all these lads who are finding their feet in the Championship, they’ve got another year under their belt. “I certainly see this as being a difficult game. Their pitch is unique in that it’s really quite tight, and the stands are right on top of you, so you need to be able to cope with that. I see it being a really competitive game. “I thought in the game last year at their place that we won, I thought they were very good for spells of that, and arguably we didn’t play at our best, but we managed to win. Millwall Football Club are currently third in the Championship, with 64 goals scored and 49 conceded, a +15 goal difference. They are 12 points behind leaders Coventry.
