Millwall Football Club boss Alex Neil said it was a really difficult decision who to start in goal against Queens Park Rangers in the first round of the EFL Cup. He explained why he opted for Lukas Jensen over Max Crocombe at Loftus Road. Jensen made his first competitive start since April 12, 2025, and saved all four of the Hoops' penalties in the shootout to help the Lions through 2-0 after a 1-1 draw in normal time. Crocombe made 26 appearances last season after joining from Burton Albion and was Neil's first-choice stopper until Anthony Patterson signed on loan from Sunderland in the January transfer window. Crocombe then played all three games for New Zealand at the World Cup before they went out at the group stage. Jensen, 27, was the Lions' No.1 after he moved from Lincoln City in the summer of 2024. He made 43 appearances and kept fifteen clean sheets in 2024-25 before an Achilles heel tear ended his campaign and another setback kept him out for the entire 2025-26 season. 'Nobody doubts how good Lukas is at shot-stopping,' Neil said on Millwall TV. 'When you come back [from injury] you've still got that quality, it's just decision-making and game-time and things like that for him. It's just getting exposure, that's why I picked him. 'It wasn't really a case of Lukas over Max, it was a really difficult decision to make. 'The two of them are very different in terms of the strengths and qualities that they have. But what I think with Lukas is that he's exceptional at stopping shots. Max is probably better with the ball at his feet, he can pick things out and different things. 'It's dependent on the game, it's dependent on how we feel the game is going to go. I needed to see Lukas. He's not played a competitive match for fifteen months. And these games are very different from pre-season matches. 'It only made sense to put him in.' Meanwhile, the draw for the second round of the competition will take place on Monday in the build-up to the game between Plymouth and Exeter City at Home Park. The draw is expected to start at around 7.20pm. With Millwall Football Club sitting 3rd in the Championship, 83 points, 24W-11D-11L from 46 games, recent form LDWDW, and 12 points behind leaders Coventry in the title race, the Lions are looking to build on their EFL Cup win. They have scored 64 goals this season, conceding 49, with a +15 goal difference.
